During the summer I know we all dread seeing the water bill each month when we have plants, gardens, animals and honestly anything else that needs water. I have found a way for homesteads and even regular homeowners to be more sustainable in their water practices by using rain barrels. No I did not create rain barrels, or the idea of them. I'm honestly not sure who did but kudos to them right? I have however found a way that allows you to create a rain barrel system without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars because the whole point in trying to create a homestead, at least for me is to be self sufficient and to be more affordable. On Facebook marketplace you can find tons of clean barrels, I always look for food grade, so I know there were never chemicals, or oils in them. You can easily purchase 2 for under $40. Once you grab those from your friendly seller, you will need a few other things. A screen grate will need to be drilled to the top opening of the barrel, this makes sure animals and debris stay out, next I suggest a brass spigot (rather than plastic) to drill into the side of the drum or barrel to get your water out of it. Depending on the type of barrel or drum you have, you may need to get couplings or fittings to keep the spigot on tight, your local hardware store can surely help you get what your need! Once you have that completed just place right under your elevated gutter and you are done!
